Sky Deutschland to stream two F1 races free on YouTube

Imola and Budapest GPs also available through German pay-TV broadcaster's digital platforms.

The Sky Deutschland pay-TV network has announced plans to stream upcoming Formula One races in Imola and Budapest for free on YouTube.

Contract:

  • The two races will also available on the Sky Sports' German digital platforms
  • Sky Deutschland’s contract requires four races per season to be available FTA

Context: Reports surfaced at the start of this season that Sky was struggling to find a FTA partner in Germany following the expiration of its contract with RTL. The German broadcaster had held the rights for the global motorsport series for nearly 30 years before Sky secured exclusive access in 2021.

For the past two seasons, RTL had sub-licensed the rights to four races due to Sky Deutschland’s contractual obligation with Formula One; however, the company decided against renewing this contract for 2023. Facing a clear lack of interest, Sky Deutschland has opted to turn to its own channels in order to fulfill its obligations.

Comment:

Coming next: The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola is next up for Formula One, taking place from 19th to 21st May. The next available FTA race is the Hungarian Grand Prix, covering 21st to 23rd July.
