The Mercedes Formula One team have claimed they will quadruple their aviation emissions reduction by the end of 2025.
Confirmed:
- The team has invested in Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates (SAFc)
- Aviation emissions are expected to fall by a total of 18,500 tCO2e across 2024 and 2025
Context:
In 2022, Mercedes became the first global sports team to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). A year later, the team reduced air travel emissions by 21 per cent thanks to this investment. Between 2022 and 2025, Mercedes are targeting emissions reductions of over 27,500 tonnes of carbon, which would quadruple the overall savings since the initial investment in 2022.
Comment:
Toto Wolff, team principal and chief executive of Mercedes, said: “A net reduction in our emissions sits at the heart of our operations and the ambitious sustainability targets we have set ourselves. We continue to invest in innovative solutions and technology that will enhance our performance, helping us go further faster.”
Coming next:
This weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix represents the first of a streak of flyaway races in Formula One where all the teams rely on air freight to get between events. The Baku City Circuit hosts the series from 13th to 15th September.
