Formula E 2024 calendar confirms Tokyo

All-electric series stated intention to race around Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre last year.

Formula E has released its 17-race provisional 2024 calendar, confirming the series’ first visit to Tokyo.

Confirmed:

  • Season starts second weekend of January in Mexico City
  • Hyderabad and Cape Town slots are unconfirmed following debuts this season
  • Formula E visits Rome in its traditional April slot, having staged the 2023 event in July
  • The round in Jakarta, Indonesia, shifts back to being a one-race event
  • A new slot for a race has been inserted on 25th May
  • Preseason testing in Valencia moved two months earlier to October

Context: The all-electric series stated its intention to race around the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre last year. Hyderabad and Cape Town played host to successful debuts this season, but currently sit off the provisional calendar. With races in Seoul and Malaga also rumoured to be in the running, there are only three slots for four potential races.

Comment: Jeff Dodds, chief executive of Formula E, said: “Tokyo will be a highlight of our historic tenth season. We are also in advanced discussions with many more iconic world cities who are keen to host a Formula E race and create blockbuster world championship motorsport events with us. We expect this to be reflected in the updated calendar published later this year.”

Calendar:

Coming next: This remains a provisional calendar and will need to be ratified by motorsport’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) before being confirmed. The 2023 schedule showed that races can also drop off unexpectedly, with the Seoul event disappearing between the provisional and official calendars after just one year on the schedule.
