Legacy Motor Club have announced they will switch manufacturers from Chevrolet to Toyota ahead of the 2024 Nascar Cup Series season.
Confirmed:
- The team has been supplied by Chevrolet since its days as Petty GMS Motorsports in 2021
- Toyota's operational expansion completed for at least 2024
Context: Toyota already supplies two teams on the Nascar Cup Series grid – Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing – but Dave Wilson, president of Toyota Racing Development, has revealed “the sweet spot [for customer team cars] is somewhere between eight to ten”, so this likely represents the manufacturer's last expansion in the stock car racing series for a while.
Comment: Jimmie Johnson, seven-time Nascar Cup Series champion and part-owner of Legacy Motor Club, said: “I just want to express my excitement to be a part of the Toyota family. Clearly have a long history – 30-plus years with Chevrolet, 20 of those years at Hendrick Motorsports — and what we did together will always be in the record books and something that I’ll always cherish.
“But as [majority team owner] Maury [Gallager] pointed out, strategically long-term, this is a foundational piece for the club that … this really makes sense. It’s something we need to do, and to have this deep alignment and partnership with Toyota, it’s been a fun period of time to get to know them and really understand their passion and how much our core values truly align.”
Coming next: The 2023 Nascar Cup Series continues this weekend at the Kansas Speedway, with the AdventHealth 400 on 7th May.
