Lamborghini has confirmed it will withdraw from the World Endurance Championship (WEC) after a single year of competition.
Confirmed:
- Two-car requirement for manufacturers competing in Hypercar is cited as a key reason for its departure
- Lamborghini said the rule meant the series was ‘no longer aligned with the company’s strategy’
- It will continue to compete in the IMSA SportsCar Championship
Context:
It was reported last month that Lamborghini was considering prioritising either WEC or IMSA as part of a wind-down of its Le Mans Daytona hybrid (LMDh) programme. Now it appears to have chosen to continue racing in IMSA, although it provided no details on its approach for next season.
The Italian manufacturer characterised its exit from WEC as a ‘pause’ and hinted at a possible return, as ‘competing at the highest level is an honour for Lamborghini Squadra Corse and remains an ambition for the years to come’.
WEC has confirmed that 13 manufacturers have committed to competing next year, with Mercedes-AMG replacing Lamborghini via a partnership with the Iron Lynx team.
Comment:
The Italian manufacturer said in a statement: ‘Lamborghini has therefore evaluated its options and elected to sit out the 2025 FIA WEC while remaining committed to the SC63 development by continuing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the United States.
‘The pause in the FIA WEC programme also allows Lamborghini Squadra Corse to focus efforts on the development of the new Temerario GT3 throughout the year, with the former set to be formally unveiled after completing outdoor testing during 2025.
‘Lamborghini Squadra Corse would like to express its thanks to both the Automobile Club de l’Ouest and the FIA for the opportunity to compete in the golden age for sportscar racing and for their support throughout the 2024 season.’
Coming next:
The 2025 WEC season will begin in Qatar on 28th February.
