The Sauber Formula One team have signed a technical partnership with fuel manufacturer Zero Petroleum.
Contract:
- Zero’s branding will feature on the engine cover of the team’s car
- Partnership will have sustainability focus with Zero’s carbon-neutral synthetic fuel
Context:
Zero Petroleum was co-founded by Paddy Lowe, whose Formula One career spanned 32 years with the likes of McLaren, Mercedes and Williams. His expertise will assist Sauber ahead of the series’ planned transition to sustainable fuels in 2026.
Using carbon dioxide from air and hydrogen from water, Zero developed and manufactured a whole-blend synthetic, non-biological fuel in a completely fossil-free process. It also opened the world’s first fully featured synthetic fuel plant near Oxford in the UK and has plans to build a commercial-scale plant that will begin production in 2026.
Comment:
Alessandro Alunni Bravi, team representative of the Sauber Formula One team, said: “The world of Formula One is one of constant innovation, in which boundaries are broken and new frontiers explored.
“This is even more so when it comes to sustainability: it’s not just the know-how of our sport that can play an important part, but also the ingenuity of the men and women behind every bit of research and development.
“At Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, we take our commitment to sustainability seriously, and our partnership with Zero is another step on the path to 100 per cent carbon-neutral, drop-in synthetic fuel. Both Zero and Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber are new names in Formula One – there’s nobody better placed to explore technical solutions the world has never seen before.”
Coming next:
The Formula One season gets underway with the Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday 2nd March.
