Nascar creates free online Cup Series race archive

Digital platform offers free, ad-free viewing of more than 1,000 full race replays.

Nascar is creating a free-to-access archive of more than 1,000 Cup Series races available online.

Confirmed:

  • Nascar Classics offers free, ad-free viewing of more than 1,000 full race replays
  • A ‘Top 75 Greatest Races’ section is also made available
  • Dedicated Nascar Classics social accounts have also been created
  • Nascar will add recently run Cup Series races to the archive within weeks of their conclusion

Context:

This follows the unveiling of an arcade-style racing game called Nascar Arcade Rush, as well as the decision to expand and extend its collegiate athletics sponsorship programme, all clear moves to engage with younger audiences.

Comment:

Tim Clark, senior vice president and chief digital officer at Nascar, said: “Nascar Classics is a significant addition to our digital content offerings that for the first time ever gives fans around the world free, uninterrupted access to enjoy decades of past Nascar Cup Series action whenever and wherever they’d like.”

Consequence:

This is the latest move in Nascar’s developing strategy to engage with younger viewers. While the nostalgia of old races caters to avid fans, ensuring that the history of the sport is available for free to anyone interested in learning more is a crucial aspect of growing its appeal. The creation of Nascar Classics accounts across all social media channels is a big indicator of the goal to target younger audiences.
