The MotoGP calendar will not expand beyond 22 races after Liberty Media’s takeover of the series, according to chief commercial officer Dan Rossomondo.

Confirmed:

  • Liberty Media acquired MotoGP in €4.2 billion (US$4.5 billion) deal last week
  • 2024 calendar sits at 21 races after cancellation of Argentina GP

Context:

In an effort to introduce Formula One to new markets, Liberty Media has aggressively expanded the calendar to the 24-race schedule of today, with potential for this to go further. After acquiring MotoGP, the thinking was that a similar plan could be enacted for the global motorcycling series.

Comment:

Rossomondo told BlackBook Motorsport: “22 [races] is probably the top number we’ll get to. This year’s 21 [races] because we had to cancel Argentina, but I think 22 is the number and we’re happy with that.”

Coming next:

With the US expected to be a big focus for MotoGP now that Liberty Media is involved, the series travels to Austin, Texas, for the next round of the 2024 season at the Circuit of The Americas, taking place from 12th to 14th April.
