MotoGP’s British Grand Prix will take place in May from next season, as announced at last weekend’s race at Silverstone Circuit.
Confirmed:
- The British Grand Prix will take place from 23rd to 25th May next season
- The event has been held in August since 2013
Context:
In recent years, the MotoGP race has struggled to attract strong attendances, with this year’s event looking especially quiet around the circuit. The crowds of 400,000 that Formula One enjoys at Silverstone is around four times what MotoGP can attract, so something had to change.
Moving the race earlier in the year will look to avoid the summer holidays, although the race will now clash with Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix and IndyCar’s Indianapolis 500. The 2025 MotoGP calendar is yet to be officially finalised, but it appears to be a matter of time as dates begin to be locked in.
Comment:
“As part of what will be a new-look 2025 calendar for us in some ways, we’re excited to celebrate the British GP at a different time of year outside the holiday period giving even more British fans the opportunity to come to Silverstone,” said Carmelo Ezpeleta, chief executive of Dorna, as reported by Motorsport.com.
“As everyone knows, MotoGP is enjoying a strong trend of positive growth for audiences and crowds around the world. We want to ensure this event, in a key market, gets the platform and exposure to enable it to play an even bigger role in that.”
