MotoGP has signed a contract extension to race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya until 2031.

Contracat:

  • Five-year extension comes into effect from next season
  • Circuit debuted on the MotoGP calendar in 1992

Context:

This extension comes as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya looks set to lose Formula One after the 2026 season. The series has agreed a deal with Madrid to host the Spanish Grand Prix and, although it is not replacing Barcelona, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya contract is expiring after 2026 and will likely not be renewed by Formula One.

Last season, after it became clear that the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia would be unable to host the MotoGP season finale due to devastating floods in the region, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya stepped in as the replacement.

According to Motorsport.com, MotoGP intends to only host two races on the Iberian peninsula from 2027. This year, there are four races taking place in Spain (Barcelona, Jerez, Valencia, Aragon) and one in Portugal.

Comment:

Carmelo Ezpeleta, chief executive of MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports, said: “We’re very happy to pen this new agreement with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

“They never fail to deliver a world-class fan weekend, we always have impressive attendance figures, and the track is so well connected to Barcelona, one of the world’s most culturally relevant cities. This is a winning combination for us and we’re excited to continue racing there.”

Coming next:

This year’s Catalan Grand Prix takes place from 5th to 7th September.
