McLaren Racing says it has reduced its total emissions per race by 23 per cent year-over-year (YoY) across all racing series.

Confirmed:

  • Total greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced 8.6 per cent in 2024, discounting the team’s investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
  • McLaren covered 100 per cent of its business travel emissions across all series through an investment in one million US gallons of SAF
  • In Formula One, switching to biofuel saw a 48 per cent reduction in road freight emissions
  • In the team’s pursuit of producing a fully circular Formula One car, McLaren achieved 37 per cent material circularity in 2024
  • 43 per cent of new starters came from underrepresented backgrounds, taking the total across the current team to 33 per cent
  • 30 per cent of McLaren’s early careers population are women

Context:

McLaren competes across four racing series: Formula One, IndyCar, Formula E, and F1 Academy. The team will be departing Formula E at the end of this season, but will shift its focus to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) instead.

This data forms part of McLaren Racing’s latest sustainability report, making it one of the more forward-thinking motorsport organisations in this regard. For instance, it is the only motorsport team to have its net-zero targets validated externally by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Comment:

“We remain committed to inspiring change, driving innovation and ultimately having a positive impact on people and our planet,” said Zak Brown, chief executive of McLaren Racing.

“We know that this is not something we can do alone, which is why I’m proud to see evidence of so much true collaboration in our 2024 Sustainability Report.

“It’s incredible to think that, in the same year as winning the F1 Constructors’ Championship, we have made real progress in environmental and social sustainability – whether that’s through our partnership with Ecolab and our significant investment in SAFc, our continued drive to open up pathways into our sport to those currently underrepresented, or key projects such as the F1 Constructors’ Circularity Handbook, developed in collaboration with Deloitte UK.”

Coming next:

McLaren Racing will be competing at two iconic events this weekend, with Formula One’s Monaco Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500 in IndyCar both taking place on Sunday 25th May.
