Formula E has topped the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS) ranking for the third consecutive year.

Confirmed:

  • Formula E ranked as ‘best total performance’ while topping the environmental, social and governance categories
  • All-electric series scores 85 out of 100 points overall

Context:

The ranking overviews corporate, environmental, social and governance categories and then GSBS grants a score out of 100. The sporting industry average was 51 out of 100 in 2024, with Formula E taking top spot by five percentage points over German soccer giants Borussia Dortmund.

Analysing more than 1,700 data points, the study assessed 64 organisations from 11 different countries, including Formula One (which scored 54 out of 100), the National Football League (NFL), which managed 33 out of 100, the National Basketball Association (NBA), which achieved 38 out of 100, and Fifa (58 out of 100).

Comment:

Julia Pallé, vice president of sustainability for Formula E, said: “We’re delighted to be independently ranked as the number one ESG sport on the planet for the third year running. Our dedication to ensuring everything is as sustainable as possible, from how we engage with communities at race locations, continually reduce our carbon footprint to the make up and diversity of our organisation and championship is paying off.

“But as with previous years, this is a mission without a finish line and we must all continually do our best day in day out to accelerate sustainable human progress. I’m proud that the reason behind our racing is being recognised, but most importantly that it is having a true impact and I hope it will inspire the rest of the sports community to follow our commitment.”

Coming next:

The news comes ahead of the start of the 2024/25 Formula E season, which gets underway this weekend in Sao Paulo from 6th to 8th December.
