All-electric series has been heavily linked with move to Silverstone, or similar traditional circuit.

Formula E has confirmed a one-year extension to race at the Excel in London.

Contract:

  • Extension confirms the UK’s spot on next year’s Formula E schedule
  • The Excel is ‘predicted’ to host the Formula E season finale in 2026

Context:

Formula E has raced at the Excel since the 2021 season, although it was meant to make its debut in 2020 before the Covid pandemic thwarted those plans. The unique indoor-outdoor track at the exhibition centre has been the season finale for the all-electric series since 2023.

A one-year extension points to Formula E’s long-term intentions in the UK. Talks around a move to Silverstone Circuit have been ongoing for some time, with previous reports suggesting a debut was even on the cards for this season.

While this did not come to fruition, it seems a matter of time before the series moves to the iconic circuit. With the debut of Formula E’s Gen4 cars coming in 2027, which are set to be all-wheel drive with a power output of 600kW, it would be ideal timing to start racing at the home of British motorsport as Formula E enters its new era.

Comment:

“We’re pleased to extend our relationship with Excel London, which has been a perfect home for Formula E over the last few years,” said Alberto Longo, chief championship officer of Formula E.

“Its unique track conditions and event space offers fans and drivers the very best of our sport, bringing the best racing and entertainment together in a truly unique venue at the heart of the capital, while all delivered sustainably.”

Coming next:

This year’s season finale at the Excel is a double-header event, with races on 26th and 27th July.
