The McLaren Formula One team have extended their partnership with Google, which will see the technology giant continue as a primary partner.

Key details:

  • Gemini, Google’s consumer artificial intelligence (AI) platform, will be at the heart of the latest collaboration
  • McLaren will expand its AI usage to help boost fan engagement, and improve performance and creative design
  • Other Google brands, including Pixel, Google Health Devices, Android and Chrome, will continue to be utilised by the team
  • Google to showcase Gemini through an activation on the Sphere across the Las Vegas weekend, which will feature the McLaren Formula One car

Context:

This is yet another commercial agreement for McLaren, but this latest extension feels different. The team’s move to bring in Mastercard as its official naming rights partner from next season raised questions about the futures of their other two primary partners, Google and OKX.

Historically, being a primary partner at McLaren meant securing the highest tier of sponsorship visibility – a valuable position given how many brands are now associated with the team. Yet, despite the recent reshuffle of McLaren’s commercial portfolio, Google has recommitted to the team at the primary partner level. That decision underlines just how successful the commercial strategy led by chief executive Zak Brown and his team has been.

Comment:

“Our partnership with Google has always been built on shared values of innovation and performance,” said Zak Brown, chief executive of McLaren Racing.

“The introduction of Gemini marks an exciting next step, helping us continually explore how AI can support our team both on and off the track. Google are an incredible partner and we look forward to continuing to push for innovation and excellence alongside them.”

Nick Drake, global vice president of marketing at Google, added: “F1 is defined by rapid innovation, so we’re thrilled to place Gemini at the center of our renewed partnership.

“We’re integrating our AI assistant into multiple aspects of the team’s workflow – giving engineers, drivers, and staff a powerful new tool to accelerate productivity and optimize performance across the team – while also bringing fans closer to the action than ever before.”
