The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has found Aston Martin in procedural breach of the Formula One budget cap for 2024.
Key details:
- Aston Martin have not exceeded the cost cap level and the procedural breach was ‘of a very minor nature’
- All nine other Formula One teams and five power unit manufacturers have been found in compliance with the financial regulations
Context:
This is a minor transgression for Aston Martin. BlackBook Motorsport understands that the FIA recognised that the team acted in good faith and resolved the issue in a timely and transparent manner.
BBC Sport has reported that the breach occurred due to a late submission of Aston Martin’s documentation for the 2024 season. This delay was caused by an individual at the independent company used by the team, who was required to sign the submission but was unwell at the time of the 31st March 2025 deadline.
The report also notes that Aston Martin have avoided a penalty for this breach, although the FIA’s official release does not mention this, only stating that the team and the FIA have entered an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA) to resolve the matter.
Last year, both Alpine and Honda negotiated ABAs after committing procedural breaches related to financial regulations for power unit manufacturers. As a result, the FIA imposed fines of €400,000 (US$432,000) and €600,000 (US$649,000), respectively.
While these amounts are relatively minor for Formula One teams, Aston Martin were one of the few loss-making outfits on the grid and will want to avoid any additional financial costs. The team’s most recent accounts showed a net loss of UK£45.8 million (US$61 million) in 2024, bringing total losses to UK£189.5 million (US$252.5 million) since 2020.
Comment:
An FIA statement read: ‘The CCA [Cost Cap Administration] confirms that although [Aston Martin] has been found to be in procedural breach, it has not exceeded the cost cap level, and that the procedural breach was of a very minor nature, originated by unpredictable circumstances outside the control of the F1 team. [Aston Martin] and FIA have entered an ABA on 29th September 2025 to resolve the matter.’
