WRC signs one-year extension to remain in Portugal

New deal includes option to extend to 2025.

The World Rally Championship (WRC) has signed a one-year extension, with an option to extend by a further year, to remain in Portugal.

Confirmed:

  • The event has an economic benefit of €60 million to Portugal
  • More than 300,000 spectators attended the 2023 rally

Context: This year’s edition of the Rally de Portugal, the 44th edition of the event, concluded last weekend on 14th May, so the WRC has wasted no time in ensuring the rally remains on the calendar for next season at the very least.

Comment: Jona Siebel, managing director of WRC Promoter, said: “This past weekend, we were once again reminded of the passion [Portugal] holds for rallying. We were greeted with loud fans, spectacular competitive stages and exceptional hospitality everywhere we went in the past four days. In the ACP [Automóvel Club de Portugal] we have a strong partner, and we now begin working on planning with them for 2024.”

Coming next: WRC returns for its sixth round of the season with the Rally Italia Sardegna from 1st to 4th June.
