MotoGP has signed a multi-year broadcast extension with Warner Bros Discovery (WBD)-owned TNT Sports in the UK and Ireland.
Contract:
- Deal includes live coverage for practice, qualifying and races across MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3
- Every sprint race will be offered free-to-air (FTA) through WBD subsidiary Quest, as well as two main races including the British Grand Prix
- MotoE, WorldWCR and various series from the Road to MotoGP will also be covered on TNT Sports and Discovery+
Context:
While not a full return to FTA television, this represents an important step for MotoGP’s visibility in the UK and Ireland. Viewership has suffered since the series moved behind a paywall, so introducing fans to sprint races appears to be a good attempt at reintegrating the championship with disconnected viewers.
At a time when MotoGP is being acquired by Liberty Media – and has just launched a new brand identity – marketing will be a key short-term priority. Making select weekend content available for free will be a great way to capitalise on the momentum that this marketing hopes to generate.
Comment:
“We’re very happy to announce that fans in the UK and Ireland can continue enjoying MotoGP on TNT Sports,” said Alex Arroyo, head of media rights at MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports.
“Since TNT first became home of MotoGP, they have provided top quality coverage of the sport for audiences in a key market.
“We’re excited that the next years of our agreement will also expand into free-to-air Sprints – an incredible addition to the championship, and one we know new fans will love even more.
“We look forward to working together to grow the sport even further across the UK and Ireland.”
