MotoGP has moved next season’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit back to August.
Confirmed:
- Next season’s race will take place from 7th to 9th August
- The British Grand Prix is the first race in 2026 to be given a confirmed date
Context:
Formula One’s most-attended race last season was the British Grand Prix at Silverstone with 480,000 spectators over the weekend, while the MotoGP equivalent failed to break the 100,000 barrier in 2025.
This season, MotoGP moved the race to May in an attempt to mix things up, with the British Grand Prix having been hosted in August since 2013. However, clashes with the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the Isle of Man TT meant significant competition.
Ultimately, moving the race back to August appears to be a mea culpa by MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports. Chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta had previously said that moving the race “outside of the holiday period” would give “even more British fans the opportunity to come to Silverstone”.
Comment:
“Announcing our return to a track is always exciting, it starts the countdown to another fantastic Grand Prix,” said Ezpeleta.
“After discussions with Silverstone we’ve agreed on a return to August and we hope fans will enjoy the chance to come and enjoy this classic venue in high summer.
“As one of the first dates to be confirmed for next year, it’s exciting news for fans in the UK and all those around the world who we know are always eager to get a glimpse of the next season’s calendar.”
Coming next:
MotoGP will hope to attract stronger crowds at its next race at MotorLand Aragón from 6th to 8th June. Of the four Spanish races on the calendar, Aragón is currently the only one to not have received a contract extension until the 2031 season, with Barcelona, Valencia and Jerez all secured on the schedule.
MotoGP’s contract with Aragón expires at the end of the 2026 season, so there are at least two more visits to the circuit which debuted in 2010. However, BlackBook Motorsport understands that Dorna is looking to reduce the number of visits to the Iberian peninsula to aid international expansion, so a further extension seems unlikely.
