MotoGP has agreed a five-year media rights extension with Ziggo Sport in the Netherlands.
Contract:
- Ziggo Sport to continue broadcasting global motorcycling series until 2029
- Deal includes exclusive rights to all practice and qualifying sessions, as well as sprint and Grand Prix races
Context:
MotoGP recently extended its hosting contract with the TT Circuit Assen until 2031, already the longest-serving track on the series’ schedule. There is a clear effort from organisers to double down on the Dutch market at the moment, which appears strange on the surface considering the lack of a Dutch talent in the top category.
However, with home prospect Collin Veijer performing well in Moto3, there is hope for the future. MotoGP is also enjoying its closest season ever, with the average winning time hovering around a second over the first seven Grands Prix. The series also claims to have seen audience increases ‘across the board’ on Ziggo Sport compared to last season, although there is no confirmation of how substantial this increase is.
Comment:
Dan Rossomondo, chief commercial officer of MotoGP rights holder Dorna, said: “Ziggo Sport has proven to be a great ambassador for MotoGP in the Netherlands over the past three years. Together, we continue to promote the world’s most exciting sport in the country and we can see that clearly paying off in 2024 as audiences soar.
“With Ziggo Sport, we have a forward-thinking partner with extensive knowledge and expertise, offering top quality MotoGP content on the various Ziggo Sport platforms. We’re very happy to continue working together.”
Coming next:
After three weeks off, MotoGP returns to action this weekend. This agreement with Ziggo Sport has been timed ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, taking place from 28th to 30th June.
