MotoGP successfully trialled 5G broadcast technology at the recent Austrian Grand Prix.
Confirmed:
- Technology allows fans at the track to follow live content from various camera perspectives on their smartphones
- Developed by ORS’ Nakolos team and technical partners, the low latency encoder, 5G Broadcast core and transmitter delivered glass-to-glass content in less than one second
Context:
The two media companies supporting the test, Dorna and ServusTV, were positive about using 5G for future applications. After the race, MotoGP extended its exclusive broadcast contract with ServusTV in Austria until 2026.

Sergi Sendra, head of global technology at Dorna Sports, said: “As the commercial rights holder for the world's most exciting sport, we naturally support new technologies that take the viewer experience to a new level and push boundaries. Innovation is a core value of our sport and we’re proud to have seen it in action with this successful test at the Red Bull Ring.”

The hope is that, following this successful trial, the technology can be rolled out on a wider scale at future races. Bringing fans at the circuit closer to the action is yet another move from the series to engage with its audience, a clear response to last year’s fan survey that revealed more needs to be done to grow the fanbase.
