IndyCar president Doug Boles hopeful Mexico race will be ‘announced soon’

Boles says Nascar race in Mexico has "put pressure" on IndyCar to get deal done, but thinks series "need each other to be successful".
  • Boles optimistic IndyCar is “going to get there” with deal

IndyCar president Doug Boles believes that the series’ long-mooted visit to Mexico will be officially confirmed soon.

Mark Miles, chief executive of IndyCar, said at the start of this year that the series was making progress on the race with an aim to debut on the calendar next season.

Now, Boles has told BlackBook Motorsport that while IndyCar is “still trying to figure out Mexico City” he said there is an expectation that “hopefully we get our event announced here soon”.

The clamour for IndyCar’s return to Mexico for the first time since 2007 has risen due to the increasing popularity of home hero Pato O’Ward, who drives for Arrow McLaren in the series.

The announcement of Nascar’s visit to Mexico also prompted IndyCar to accelerate its conversations, with Boles admitting that it added pressure to secure a race in the country.

“I don’t know that there was frustration that they (Nascar) announced before we did,” he said. “Obviously it put pressure on the series to try and get our deal done … and I think we’re going to get there.

“From the outside, I know people think Nascar and IndyCar are competing against each other. At some level, we are. But at another level, we need each other to be successful and we need to learn from each other. Nascar has been an open book with me forever and continue to be so I will just learn from them.”

IndyCar has not raced in Mexico since visiting the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in the 2007 season.
