Report: IndyCar considering future calendar expansion

2023 schedule was unveiled on 27th September with 17 races.
  • IndyCar wants to reach 19-20 races per season
  • Potential destinations include Milwaukee and Mexico

The IndyCar Series is looking to expand its calendar beyond the current 17 races, according to motorsport news outlet Racer.

The report says that US open-wheel series is interested in expanding its calendar to 19 or 20 races per season, with new events being added at a rate of one race per season from 2024 to 2026.

A return to the Milwaukee Mile and a trip to Mexico are currently said to be the leading candidates to receive future IndyCar events.

Earlier this year, McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown called on organisers to consider looking outside North America for an IndyCar expansion, particularly Mexico for current Arrow McLaren SP driver Pato O’Ward.

Racer has confirmed that three other events are also under consideration: a street race in Denver, another oval outing at Richmond International Raceway, and an unspecified road course in the west.
