All-electric series Formula E has announced its intention to stage a race in Tokyo from 2024.

The race is set to be staged in the area around Tokyo Big Sight, the largest international exhibition centre in Japan, in the spring of 2024, subject to International Automobile Federation (FIA) approval.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been working towards becoming a city that emits no CO2 through the use of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), and Formula E will work with Tokyo to promote the ZEV strategy.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the race was signed between Yuriko Koike, governor of Tokyo, and Jamie Reigle, chief executive of Formula E, on 3rd October.

“I am excited and honoured to stand alongside governor Koike and announce the collaborative partnership between Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Formula E,” said Reigle.

“Together we will work to bring a Formula E race to the city in 2024 in support of the ‘zero emission Tokyo’ commitment.

“Tokyo is an iconic world city, recognised as an innovator in consumer technology, a leader in the automotive industry and a global cultural trendsetter.

“Formula E is delighted to partner with Tokyo Metropolitan Government to establish the city as a reference in zero emissions initiatives.”
