Formula E and Google Cloud have announced they are developing a driver coaching tool powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that is designed to democratise data and level the playing field for young racing talent.
Confirmed:
- ‘Driver Agent’ uses Google’s large language model to provide real-time feedback to drivers
- Google Cloud is collaborating closely with More than Equal as part of this partnership
Context:
The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between top-tier drivers and those without access to sophisticated performance analytics, which is intended to improve the overall accessibility of motorsport. The Driver Agent tool is able to process extensive racing data, such as lap times, speed, braking, acceleration, G-forces, and downforce, and then deliver insights to drivers via text or audio coaching.
More than Equal, which is an organisation dedicated to identifying and developing female talent in motorsport, is also offering its expertise to this collaboration. The partnership includes providing access to advanced driving simulators at Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport and Centre of Excellence for Women in Sport, as well as Driver Agent technology for More than Equal’s Driver Development Programme consisting of five up-and-coming female drivers.
Comment:
“Formula E has always been a platform for innovation, and we are thrilled to partner with Google Cloud to push the boundaries of what’s possible when you combine world-class technology with world-class motorsport,” said Beth Paretta, vice president of sporting at Formula E.
“By developing and offering these cutting-edge tools, we are helping to create a future where racing talent is determined by skill, not resources, enabling a more diverse pool of drivers and especially women, rise to the very top of our sport.”
Barnaby Voss, marketing director for UK & Ireland and EMEA at Google Cloud, added: “The introduction of Driver Agent is going to be a game changer for drivers on and off the track. By democratising access to this high-level performance data, the Driver Agent enables drivers of all backgrounds to refine their skills and improve on the track, regardless of resources or team size.”
Coming next:
Formula E is determined to reduce barriers to entry in motorsport, with this being the latest step taken by the series towards improving accessibility. Last year, Formula E ran an all-female test session, the first time an International Automobile Federation (FIA) championship had staged such a session. This is being expanded in 2025.
