Formula E and the International Automobile Federation (FIA) have confirmed a ten-year contract extension that will run to 2048.

Confirmed:

  • Formula E to remain the only sanctioned all-electric series by the motorsport’s governing body
  • Reuters reports deal includes an option for a further five years, taking the contract to 2053

Context:

Formula E was founded in 2014, with an initial 25-year agreement reached with the federation. It is majority owned by Liberty Global, with the media company acquiring the shares owned by Warner Bros Discovery last year. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) also owns a stake in the series.

The new deal comes ahead of the introduction of the series’ Gen4 era, which will see new technical regulations introduced starting with the 2026/27 campaign. By 2048, the series expects its cars’ performance to equal or exceed the performance of other top-tier single categories such as Formula One.

Comment:

“The extension of the agreement governing the FIA Formula E World Championship is a fantastic outcome for the sport and a clear reflection of our ongoing strategy at the FIA to foster long-term stability, innovation, and growth across all areas of motorsport,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president at the FIA.

“This milestone reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and technological progress, which are all central to the championship’s unique identity and purpose. It also aligns with our broader goal of increasing global participation and driving more accessible motorsport for all.”

“We’ve believed in Formula E since day one, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it’s headed,” added Mike Fries, chief executive at Liberty Global. “This is the motorsport of the future – a championship that combines the very latest technology, close-combat racing, and a mission that really matters.

“With the FIA’s continued backing, we can now take the next big steps – scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve.”

Coming next:

Formula E held its final two races in London for its 12th season on 26th and 27th July, with the next campaign to begin in Brazil’s São Paulo on 6th December. The 2025/26 season is set to feature a record 18 races.
