Formula One has renewed its media rights deal with Tencent in mainland China until 2027.

Contract:

  • Tencent continues as the series’ exclusive digital media broadcasting platform in mainland China
  • Coverage will be available through Tencent Sports, WeChat, Tencent News, qq.com and QQ
  • Tencent will broadcast all Formula One sessions, as well as highlights from F1 Academy

Context:

Formula One first partnered with Tencent midway through the 2023 season. That initial contract, which expired at the end of last year, operated in tandem with a linear broadcasting agreement with CCTV. There has been no official confirmation on an extension to this latter deal, but CCTV aired the season-opening Australian Grand Prix last weekend.

The Shanghai International Circuit returned to the Formula One schedule last season after a five-year absence and recently agreed an extension to remain on the calendar until at least the 2030 season.

Comment:

“Since the return of Formula One to China last year, it’s been great to see millions of fans across
China tune in every weekend to watch the drama and excitement of Formula One,” said Michaella Snoeck, head of media rights at Formula One.

“The incredible viewership shows a real passion for the sport, and by bringing F1 Academy to China for the first time this season, we hope to continue to build on the growing female audience in the country.

“In Tencent, we have a dedicated partner who is committed to producing world-class broadcast across its digital platforms that further ignites fans love of motorsport throughout the country.”

Coming next:

This agreement comes ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, which will also host the season-opening race for F1 Academy, taking place from 21st to 23rd March.
