Formula One has agreed a new three-year media rights deal with Grupo Televisa in Mexico until the end of the 2028 season.
Contract:
- Rights package includes live coverage of every practice, qualifying and race session through Sky Sports channels available via carriers Sky and Izzi
- Full coverage of the Mexican Grand Prix and an additional two events each season will be broadcast on Televisa’s free-to-air (FTA) channels
Context:
Formula One rights were previously held by Fox Sports México, the network operated by Media Deportes Mexico (MDM), which had signed a three-year deal in 2022. However, Fox Sports México has reportedly struggled to make rights payments to several rights owners on time, with the Premier League prematurely ending its broadcast deal with the network in February.
It is also facing a trademark infringement lawsuit from Fox, which has alleged MDM has continued to use the Fox Sports México name without permission.
Now, Televisa has stepped in early to take Formula One’s Mexican media rights, with the agreement beginning immediately.
As part of the deal, the series’ over-the-top (OTT) platform F1 TV will remain available in the Mexican market.
The new deal comes ahead of Mexican driver Sergio Pérez’s return to the grid, with the 35-year-old to race for the Cadillac Formula One team next year.
Comment:
“The Mexican people are hugely passionate about Formula One, so it’s critical for us to have an excellent broadcast partner in the country to ensure our fans are receiving the very best coverage of our sport,” said Ian Holmes, chief media rights and broadcasting officer of Formula One.
“Televisa’s commitment and coverage will be second to none across Mexico and the move to them couldn’t be better timed, with the US Grand Prix in Austin this coming weekend, followed by the home race in Mexico City, where we know the drivers and teams will receive an incredible, warm welcome.”
“We are proud to announce that Formula One, one of the fastest growing and most passionate sports spectacles in Mexico and worldwide, will be broadcast in its entirety through various multiplatform windows across both free and pay television,” added Olek Loewenstein, president of global sports of TelevisaUnivision.
“We thank Formula One for allowing us to be, for more than three years, the official home of all its Grands Prix in Mexico and for bringing our audiences the thrill of this world-class sporting event.”
Coming next:
Sky Sports will broadcast the US Grand Prix in Mexico between 17th and 19th October. The Mexican Grand Prix, held a week later, will be broadcast on both Sky Sports and the Televisa FTA channel.
