F1 extends Austrian GP deal until 2041

Red Bull Ring now aligned with recent contract extension agreed with Miami International Autodrome.

Formula One has signed an extension that retains the Austrian Grand Prix until the 2041 season.

Confirmed:

  • Red Bull Ring agrees 11-year extension to previous deal which was set to expire in 2030
  • Austrian Grand Prix now holds joint-longest contract in Formula One alongside Miami

Context:

The Austrian Grand Prix rejoined the Formula One schedule in 2014, having been absent for ten seasons, thanks to efforts from the late Dietrich Mateschitz. The man behind Red Bull and its motorsport activities invested significantly into the A1-Ring, transforming the Styrian circuit into what is now known as the Red Bull Ring.

Mateschiz’s son Mark inherited his shares in Red Bull and continues to drive the company’s Formula One interests. With two teams on the grid, and no sign of that changing soon, it’s not a surprise to see the Red Bull-backed circuit’s long-term future secured.

The Austrian Grand Prix now matches the recent extension agreed with the Miami Grand Prix, making it the joint-longest contract on the Formula One calendar. These two races now lead other long-term fixtures on the schedule like Bahrain, which expires in 2036, Australia and Canada in 2035, and the UK in 2034.

Comment:

“Austria has long been an incredibly special race for Formula One so it’s fantastic we have secured the long-term future of a Grand Prix so deeply rooted in the sport’s history,” said Stefano Domenicali, president and chief executive of Formula One.

“The vision and passion of Dietrich Mateschitz gave the race the investment and attention that allowed it to return as an incredible event on the Formula One calendar. Each year, returning to the stunning Styrian mountains is a highlight – an experience that evokes incredible emotion among our drivers, teams, and fans alike, creating an atmosphere unlike any other.

“I want to extend my sincere thanks to Mark Mateschitz and Thomas Überall and his team for their unwavering dedication to excellence, and to our incredible Austrian fanbase, whose enthusiasm and loyalty continue to elevate this iconic race.”

Mark Mateschitz added: “I am delighted that Formula One will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come. I am proud to continue my father’s legacy and to preserve the rich history of motor racing in Styria and at the Red Bull Ring – with and, above all, for the people of the region.

“Austria’s close ties to Formula One are an excellent foundation for our long-term partnership. Working together, we intend to continue this success story for many years to come.”

Coming next:

Next year’s Austrian Grand Prix has already been confirmed for 28th June as part of the wider 2026 schedule announcement earlier this month. This schedule received a slight tweak on 30th June as the International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will move to Saturday 26th September to accommodate a national day of mourning. Each day of the event will move one day earlier than planned.

As part of this update, Formula One and the FIA also confirmed there will be three preseason tests ahead of the introduction of the new technical regulations. A private test will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from 26th to 30th January, before two open sessions at the Bahrain International Circuit from 11th to 13th February and 18th to 20th February.
