Extreme E reveals new format for 2023

All race weekends in season three will be doubleheaders.

Extreme E has refreshed its X Prix weekend format to include two races at every event.

Contract:

  • 2023 season doubles from five to ten races
  • Single-car qualifying swapped out for five-car qualifying and finals

Context: Traditionally, the sport for purpose championship would have one race per weekend as it travels the globe raising awareness of how climate change is affecting different remote locations. By adding an extra race at every weekend, the series can double the on-track action without any significant impact on its carbon footprint.

Comment: Alejandro Agag, founder and chief executive of Extreme E, said: “Since launching Extreme E, we have worked hard to improve the level of racing out on course to ensure it is thrilling to watch with plenty of action. This new sporting format goes even further to deliver that, with now double the amount of racing action on some of the toughest courses in the world, leaving zero additional impact on the planet.”

Coming next: The new format will be on show for the first time from 11th to 12th March at the Desert X Prix in Neom, Saudi Arabia.
