The Belgian Grand Prix will continue on the Formula One on a rotational basis after agreeing a multi-year extension.
Confirmed:
- Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps will feature on the schedule in four of the next six years
- The Grand Prix will be run in the 2026, 2027, 2029 and 2031 seasons
Context:
The extension follows significant investment at the circuit in recent years, including the addition of two new grandstands – increasing the capacity by 10,000 – and the enhancement of the off-track entertainment and fan experience.
The Belgian Grand Prix is the first race to be placed on a rotational basis since Stefano Domenicali, president and chief executive of Formula One, revealed in November there would be imminent news on the subject.
With Rwanda stepping up its efforts to bring Formula One back to Africa, and other races mooted in the likes of Argentina and Thailand, it was likely to see European events sacrificed for the sake of a more global calendar.
At the very least, the compromise of rotation keeps the historic Spa-Francorchamps associated with Formula One until at least 2031.
Comment:
“The Belgian Grand Prix was one of the races that made up our maiden championship in 1950, so as we kick off our 75th anniversary year it is fitting that we can share the news of this important extension,” said Domenicali.
“Spa-Francorchamps is rightly lauded by drivers and fans alike as one of the finest racetracks in the world and it has played host to some incredible moments over its many seasons in Formula One.
“In recent years it has undergone significant work to improve the facility and overall fan experience, and I would like to pay tribute to the promoter and the Government of Wallonia for their dedication and passionate support for Formula One in Belgium.”
Coming next:
This year’s Belgian Grand Prix, the last of the existing deal, takes place from 25th to 27th July and will see the Sprint return to the track.
