US motorsports team Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) has signed PNC Bank as a full-season primary sponsor for its forthcoming Verizon IndyCar Series campaign.
In what is its first-ever IndyCar primary sponsorship, the Pittsburgh-based bank will support the team’s No. 9 entry driven by Scott Dixon, a four-time series champion.
Under the terms of the agreement, PNC Bank branding will feature prominently on Dixon’s Honda during every race this year, including at May’s Indianapolis 500.
PNC Bank has been a partner of CGR in a lesser capacity for the past five years. Financial terms of its expanded deal have not been disclosed.
"Our racing team has enjoyed a formal relationship with PNC since 2013 where we have created opportunities to introduce our love of the sport of racing to PNC and their clients,” said team owner Chip Ganassi.
“Today's announcement allows us to expand the fan experience at race tracks across the US and take our two winning brands to a global viewing audience.”
PNC Bank’s enhanced deal fills a sponsorship void for CGR, which was forced to seek new backing after its long-standing relationship with Target elapsed at the end of 2016. Last year, the team signed several different primary sponsors while it looked for a new long-term partner.
This year’s 17-race Verizon IndyCar Series season begins on 11th March with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida.
