Nascar, the US stock car racing organisation, has promoted Steve Phelps to the role of chief operating officer.

Based at Nascar’s headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida, Phelps will oversee all of the series’ commercial and media operations. The role was previously held by Brent Dewar, who was promoted to the role of president in July last year.

Phelps has occupied various roles since joining Nascar in 2005, and most recently served as executive vice president and chief marketing, media and sales officer. His previous experience also includes spells as a senior executive with the National Football League (NFL) and Wasserman Media Group.

“Steve has worked passionately over the years to lead the sport and it’s clear his impact is felt in all corners of the industry,” said Dewar. “We could not be more thrilled for him to step into the pivotal role of chief operating officer and we look forward to welcoming him back to Daytona Beach, where he’ll continue to work closely with myself and the other members of the executive leadership team, including the board of directors.”
