MotoGP set for Thailand debut

The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and Dorna Sports, the owner and promoter of motorcycling racing series MotoGP, have confirmed that Thailand will host a MotoGP race next year.

According to the SAT, the 2018 Thai MotoGP race weekend will be held at the Buriram Circuit from 5th to 7th October. However, the calendar dates have not been officially confirmed by MotoGP or Dorna Sports.

The US$58.9 million Formula One-certified Buriram Circuit was publically unveiled in 2014. The provincial city of Buriram is located in one the kingdom’s poorest regions but the Grand Prix is expected to increase local businesses, government and tourism.

"The talks took three hours and concluded with Dorna Sports being willing to give Thailand rights for three years beginning in 2018 up to 2020," said a spokesman from the SAT.
