McLaren Honda have become the first Formula One team to enter the realm of eSports after announcing ‘World’s Fastest Gamer’, which is a competition for virtual racers.
World’s Fastest Gamer is a collaboration between McLaren, gaming device company Logitech G, and the founder of virtual motorsport’s GT Academy, Darren Cox.
The competition will pit the best racing gamers against each other, and the winner will be offered a one-year contract with McLaren as an official simulator driver.
As well as virtual racing ability, candidates will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of engineering that would make them a valuable member of the company’s F1 team.
McLaren’s recruitment process will be viewable at every stage on the company’s YouTube and social media channels.
The competition will reach its conclusion this autumn, and McLaren have teamed up with media platform GiveMeSport and eSports racing specialists Sparco for the launch.
“This is a hugely exciting opportunity – not only within the gaming industry, but for everyone at McLaren and motorsport in general,” said Zak Brown, McLaren Technology Group executive director, “We’ve long witnessed the growth of online sports gaming, and, right now, the parallels between the real and the virtual worlds have never been closer.
“This is absolutely the right time to be creating such a unique and exciting proposition; one that connects the worlds of racing and gaming in a way that’s never been explored before.”
