The Mercedes-affiliate HWA AG motor racing team have announced that they will join Formula E from the 2018/19 season.
HWA join as a customer entry, and will be the 11th team to join the grid for the all-electric racing series’ fifth season.
The Germany-based team develop and build vehicles and components for Mercedes-AMG, and are also responsible for managing the AMG Mercedes team in the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) series.
HWA have collaborated with the Venturi Formula E team throughout the current season as a provider of technical support, and will extend their existing partnership with the Monaco-based outfit to receive powertrains for the 2018/19 Formula E season.
Venturi, as a founding team within Formula E, currently front two Mercedes-AMG Motorsport drivers – Edoardo Mortara and Maro Engel - who currently sit 11th and 12th in the championship respectively, with the team placed 7th.
HWA’s entry comes ahead of Mercedes’ own arrival in the electric championship for 2019/20.
The 2018/19 Formula E season is set to feature the debut of Formula E's Gen2 machines, which have a longer battery life and higher top speed than the current cars, and were recently tested in two closed group manufacturer sessions.
Ulrich Fritz, head of Mercedes-AMG DTM, said, "Formula E is a completely new motorsport discipline with extremely tough competition. It's a challenge that we're very happy to rise to. HWA AG are the most successful team ever in DTM history. Our goal is to continue the company's success story in Formula E."
Alejandro Agag, founder and chief executive of Formula E, added: "It's rewarding to see a name so synonymous with racing join the already impressive and growing list of teams and manufacturers competing in Formula E."
Formula E heads to Germany for the Berlin ePrix on 19th May.
