Car manufacturer continues as title sponsor of Canadian stage for three years.

Honda extends commitment to Toronto’s IndyCar race

Honda has agreed a three-year extension of its deal to be the title sponsor of the Toronto IndyCar race, which is a stage on American motorsport’s Verizon IndyCar Series.

Under the terms of the agreement, the open-wheel racing event will continue to be formally known as the Honda Indy Toronto until 2020. The Japanese car manufacturer has held the naming rights to the race since 2009.   

The announcement came after this year’s instalment of the race on Sunday, which was won by Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden of the USA. 

Jeff Atkinson, president of Honda Indy Toronto, said: “Honda Canada’s commitment has been tremendous. We have really focused the last few years on creating an experience appealing to families, and Honda has been phenomenal in helping us accomplish this ambition.”

Dave Gardner, president and chief executive of Honda Canada, added: “Honda's DNA is built on racing, which we've celebrated and are very proud of for nearly 60 years. Honda and IndyCar have enjoyed a fantastic partnership over the last nine years bringing racing excitement to the streets of Toronto every July.
