Formula E retains BMW backing

Formula E has agreed a multi-year extension of its partnership with BMW’s plug-in i brand.

The German automotive manufacturer, which is a founding partner of Formula E, will continue to be the electric racing series’ official vehicle partner. The company will supply a fleet of vehicles, including the new model BMW i3s  as medical cars, and the BMW i8, which is used as the safety car.

In July, BMW followed fellow German carmaker Audi by confirming that it will compete as an official manufacturer in Formula E from the 2018/19 season.

“BMW believed in this project from the very beginning,” said Formula E's founder and chief executive Alejandro Agag. “It’s a legendary brand in the world of sports and in the car industry and soon we will also have them in the pit lane trying to win.”

Jörg Reimann, vice president of BMW brand experience, added: “Formula E is breaking new ground in motorsport in many ways, just as BMW i does in terms of the mobility of the future, which is why the combination works really well.”

The 2017/18 Formula E season gets underway this weekend with a double-header in Hong Kong.
