All-electric Elite World Cup hypercar championship announced

Co-founded by Tokyo Sexwale, championship set to debut in September 2024.

The all-electric hypercar Elite World Cup, co-founded by Tokyo Sexwale, has been officially unveiled.

Confirmed:

  • Championship is set to debut in September 2024
  • Co-founders include Tokyo Sexwale, Liu Yu and Stephen Watson
  • Planned calendar targets the traditional motorsport off-season between September and March
  • Lotus Evija hypercar to be used by teams across eight to ten events

Context:

The three co-founders were key players in the A1 Grand Prix World Cup, a series that recently saw resurrection plans seeking investment of US$100 million. The Elite World Cup has no connection to these revival plans, according to Autosport.

Comment:

Sexwale said: “The Elite World Cup is not just a racing competition, it is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation and sustainability.”

Watson added: “The Cup is called Elite for a reason as we will engage and invite experienced international racing car drivers that have competed across F1, Indy Car, NASCAR, WRC and the likes. We want the drivers and teams who have established themselves and represented their countries in various prestigious motorsport championships around the world.”

Coming next:

The series is looking to attract elite, top-level drivers, rather than replicating the junior series feel of A1GP. Autosport reports that the Elite World Cup is targeting buy-in from 25 national teams, with each team fielding a minimum of two drivers.
