The Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) has appointed Travis Auld, a senior figure at the Australian Football League (AFL), as its new chief executive.
Confirmed:
- Auld replaces Andrew Westacott, who left the AGPC at the end of June after 11 years in the role
- AGPC oversees elite motorsport events in Australia, including the Formula One and MotoGP races
- Auld commences his new position on 14th August, following the conclusion of his current position with the AFL
Context: The AGPC is responsible for two of the biggest international events in Australia. Recently, the organisation negotiated a long-term extension to retain the Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne until 2037. MotoGP is contracted to race in Australia until 2026.
Comment: Paul Little, AGPC chairman, who will step down in September, said: “I am very pleased to announce Travis as our new CEO who brings a wealth of sports, entertainment and business experience. Travis is an outstanding leader and person and he joins the Corporation at an exciting growth period for both our major international events in Formula One and MotoGP.”
Coming next: Travis Auld’s first order of business will be to tie down MotoGP to a long-term contract. After this year’s October race at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, there will be three races left as part of the current deal. Whether any extension will be as long as the mammoth deal with Formula One remains to be seen, but tying down a key international event will be a crucial early test.
