C.J. O’Donnell was named as chief marketing officer for Hulman Motorsports in November 2013. He leads the combined team of INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway marketing, communications and social media.
O’Donnell has built a strong Marketing and Communications team in the past two seasons at Hulman Motorsport. As a result, INDYCAR has experienced growth in all measures of fan engagement, highlighted by increases in TV ratings and viewership on both ABC and NBCSN in 2014 and 2015. In this timeframe viewership increases 38% and INDYCAR’s social and digital platforms have seen marked growth.
O’Donnell joined Hulman Motorsports after serving for over 20 years in a variety of marketing and management positions at Ford Motor Company. His last role at Ford was Group Electrification Marketing manager, which he assumed in 2012. Ford launched several hybrid vehicles and enjoyed a record year for hybrid and electric vehicle sales with O’Donnell’s oversight of day-to-day marketing activities.
Before that role, O’Donnell worked in several sales, marketing and product development positions with Jaguar, Ford, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury. He served as executive vice president of marketing and sales for Jaguar North America, global marketing director for Jaguar Cars Ltd. in Great Britain and group marketing manager for Lincoln. O’Donnell also was a key member of a small team that orchestrated the turnaround of the Mazda brand.
O’Donnell, 52, a native of West Hazleton, Pa., graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Villanova University and has a Master of Business Administration degree in Marketing from Columbia Business School. He is an avid runner and an accomplished open-wheel and sports car racer in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) events.
